UPDATE 3.39pm: Power has been restored from the Murgon substation.  About 7000 customers in Murgon, Cherbourg, Goomeri, Proston and Wondai, plus those in Kilkivan had power restored.

INITIAL:  Thunderstorms have cut power to thousands of South Burnett residents.

Ergon Energy spokesman Rod Rehbein said about 12,000 customers are without supply due to faults on the sub-transmission lines into the Nanango and Murgon substations after this afternoon's storm cell lashed the region.

"This is affecting customers in Nanango, Yarraman, Blackbutt, Benarkin, Cooyar, Maidenwell, Murgon, Cherbourg, Goomeri, Proston, Wondai and surrounding areas," he said.

"A further 600 customers in the Kilkivan area and about 900 in the Curra and Bell's Bridge area are also affected."
