THEY came from far and wide with one thing in mind - to catch the biggest catfish. And maybe to win some prize money.
The drawcard was the Paradise Stocking Association third annual Catch a Catty Day Family Fishing Competition at Mingo Crossing at the weekend.
Even though there were storms on Friday night the weekend brought some sunny weather. Association president Lofty Wendt said it was a fantastic weekend.
"There were 133 senior and 50 junior nominations for the weekend. This was a significant increase for the juniors," Mr Wendt said.
"This is what we are all about, encouraging the young people to fish. "It's basic fishing - a hand line and a bit of bait would catch anyone a fish, especially catfish."
He said the weekend was a great way to promote the region and people travelled from across Queensland. From all reports everyone enjoyed themselves even though many went home without catching that really big one.
There were heaps of fish caught besides the Catfish including Golden Perch, Bass, Eel-tail Catfish, Spangle Perch and Garfish in which all the winners in these categories were rewarded with a prize, thanks to the sponsors.
The winner of the biggest catfish was Trevor Clarey of Mt Perry with a 3.956kg fish, Kylie Buckholz of Gayndah with a 1.568 kg fish, Cody Tierney of Tiaro with a 1.482kg fish and Tekiya George of Gayndah with a 1.526kg fish.
The winners of Saturday's major draws of camping gear and fishing road and tackle box were won by Peter Enchelmaier of Mundubbera and Sophie Doyle of Gayndah. Sunday's winners, Peter Brinnand of Gladstone took home and jet cleaner and radio while Jasmin Briggs took home some camping gear.
Miranda Bucholz of Gayndah had a lucky weekend winning first and third prizes in the major raffle While Phil Walker, also of Gayndah won the second prize.
Besides the major winners everyone gathered together on Saturday night and Sunday for lucky draws and the committee would like to thank all sponsors who donated to make them possible.
The members of Paradise Stocking Association would also like to thank all the competitors who made the weekend the huge success it was and hope to see them all again next year.
