MURGON'S Matthew Mott has added the latest trophy to his fabulous fishing career.
The Australian Bass Tour champion won the recent Hervey Bay Boat Club Game Fishing Classic as champion club angler and the champion overall angler.
The three-day event was Mott's first game fishing tournament and he said it was a thrill to win on debut at Hervey Bay.
"We weren't going there to specifically win and it was a big thrill for us," he said.
"It's still a bit surreal to think we went to do a marlin tournament and won it. That's not what's supposed to happen.
"But once we got into it, it was just like any bass tournament once we realised we could win."
Mott and his crew spent 12-13 hours on the water each day in pursuit of the game fishing title.
The Australian Fishing Championships winning team member said his crew had taken the tournament lead at the end of day one.
"We had caught 21 marlins and dropped just as many and we were leading the competition by two fish," he said.
Mott said his crew had extended their tournament lead by the end of day two despite the worsening conditions.
"The second day was very rough and we lost a lot of fish because of the conditions," he said.
"It calmed later in the day and we landed 17 fish and we were 14 or 15 in front by the night."
Saturday night brought a severe weather warning, which prompted Mott and his crew to forgo day three and head to land.
"We decided to go home and our skipper Rob decided safety first," he said. "We had a big enough lead, but it was still a nervous wait and we are very excited to win."
