STEPAHNIE O'Brien will play her first Brisbane club netball after joining Brisbane West Lions for the 2013 season.

O'Brien has played for Queensland at under-17 and U-19 level and is in this year's U-21 squad.

She shared the most valuable player award with Lions player Alex Thams in Queensland State Netball League tier 2 this season.

O'Brien said she had signed with Lions because of the pathway to the tier 1 Queensland competition, the Holden Cruze Cup.

For the past five years, O'Brien has played for the Darling Downs Panthers.

She played two seasons in tier 1 before Panthers withdrew from the cup and just fielded a tier 2 team.

Each week of the season, O'Brien will travel to Brisbane for Tuesday night training and for a game at the weekend.

"I expect to start in the Lions tier 2 team and hope to play a few games in tier 1 this season," O'Brien said.

"The aim is to make the Queensland Firebirds."

At the end of the 2013 state league season, O'Brien plans to play some Warwick club games for Hazards where she plays goal attack. She might also play wing attack for Lions.

The next date on her netball calendar is January 12 when the Queensland U-21 squad is reduced from 18 to 12 players for the nationals.

"I am confident enough I can make the 12," she said.
