A PUSH for more police in the Brisbane Valley has seen Somerset Regional Council take on the Police Minister Jack Dempsey's office.

The Minister's office told the council the region was adequately resourced.

The council requested an increase in officers in Lowood to bring the station up to 16 officers, which would allow it to operate 16 hours a day. The Minister's office said Lowood station was staffed "in accordance with the QPS staffing allocation model".

The council also raised with Mr Dempsey the rapidly increasing growth in and around Fernvale and the need for a police station to be built there.

Mayor Graeme Lehmann said it was disappointing the council would not receive additional police services in the near future.

"We need to keep pushing and we need to keep the pressure on if we want things to change," Cr Lehmann said. "It's the only way we will be able to convince the authorities that we need additional police in our rapidly growing region."

He said the council would continue to liaise with Police Inspector Kevin Keillor, with advice from Mr Dempsey, regarding the region's need for additional police resources.

Department spokesman Danny Donald said there was a plan to increase police numbers across the state.

"There are plans to increase the amount of police officers, recruiting 11,000 over the next few years through a massive recruiting campaign," he said.
