Queensland quick cuts the mustard

GIVEN the way selectors are just handing out Australian caps to anyone, I don't know what more Ben Cutting has to do to cement his place in the national side.

The Queensland Bulls and Brisbane Heat quick has been one of the form players of the domestic season.

Luke Pomersbach may have set up the Heat's Big Bash League semi-final victory but it was Cutting who brought it home.

His ability to keep his overs tight and take wickets at crucial stages is invaluable.

Cutting didn't get lucky off a few catches against the Renegades, he took every wicket by clean bowling the opposing batsmen.

The 25-year-old is Brisbane's leading wicket-taker with 11 and ranked fourth overall for the BBL.

And he is ranked in the top 10 for the Sheffield Shield with 22 wickets and the sixth-best average for a regular bowler at 18.81.

They're impressive statistics, bettered only by the current crop of bowlers being rotated through the Australian Test side.

But Cutting is also more than capable with the bat, making him a great all-round option.

He is ranked 13th in the Sheffield Shield with 348 runs and a century to his name already this summer.

If selection in the national side is supposed to be a reward for consistent first-class form, there is no player more deserving of a call-up than Ben Cutting.

Cutting did earn his first one-day cap last Sunday in a match that was a miserable failure for Australia.

Sri Lanka dominated the home side so I can understand why Aussie selectors would be looking to change the team for today's clash at the Gabba.

But I cannot fathom how John Inverarity and company could have decided that Cutting was surplus to their requirements on his home deck.

With 27 runs and the best bowling figures of 1-42, Cutting was a shining light for Australia in an otherwise dismal innings.

Cutting is on stand-by today as injury cover for Moises Henriques who was injured during a net session yesterday.

But after such a promising debut, Cutting did not deserve to be dropped in the first place, especially on the ground where he plays most of his cricket.

As a Brisbane Heat fan, I should probably thank Aussie selectors for their oversight.

I have no doubt that the Heat would not be in tomorrow night's BBL grand final without Cutting.

But it's disappointing to see such a talented player overlooked for higher honours in spite of his brilliant form.

Cricket Australia's selection policies have already been farcical this summer.

They're only making things worse by sending the message that form doesn't matter.
