TWO Maranoa Netball Association girls are about to make history as the first two players from the district to be part of the Darling Down's Panthers Queensland State Netball League Team.
16-year-old Zoe Peak and 15-year-old Matika Laycock were selected for the team after they impressed coach Gary Fry at the selections.
"They acquitted themselves very well against the other girls trying out for the team," Mr Fry said.
Zoe and Matika were joined at the selections by teammate Colina Grant.
Mr Fry said although Colina did not make the team she had displayed real potential and has been asked to continue to train with the Panthers.
"We want to involve the girls from out west as much as we can because they are to a degree isolated by distance," Mr Fry said.
"Hopefully Zoe and Matika will be the first two of many to join us from the district."
Playing with the Panthers will be a huge step up for the girls, as the Darling Downs team plays in the second highest division in the state.
Coach Leona Collins said she's confident the girls have what it takes to continue to play netball professionally.
"This will give them some great exposure," Ms Collins said.
Matika Laycock said she and Zoe will be travelling down to Toowomba once a week to train with the Panthers as they prepare for the 2013 season.
"Then next year we will travel every weekend to places like Bunduberg, Townsville, Rockhampton and Brisbane to compete," Matika said.
Zoe Peak said it was incredibly exciting to be selected for the team and they're looking forward to starting training next week.
"It's going to be a big leap up for us and getting to play on another level," Zoe said.
Matika and Zoe thanked their coaches Leona Collins and Peta Jackson as well as their parents for making their selection on the team possible.
Now the girls are looking for sponsors to help them cover their significant travel expenses.
