SPEEDWAY is officially back, with an action-packed weekend at Roma Speedway.

More than 1000 local rev heads turned out for Round 3 of the Wild Desert Allstars Series, an intense night of racing which saw Rodney Pammenter win the event while Gavin Lorensen hung on to his series lead.

Best among the local drivers were John Alcock, who finished fifth in the Street Sedans class, and Roma Speedway Club president Shannon Blackburn. Blackburn now ranks fifth place in the Allstars series, jumping up from number 14 in his 1980 Ford Cortina.

Two-time Australian speedway champion Todd Doyle also set a new lap record, blazing through the track in 15.988 seconds.

Kingaroy Speedway's Ryan Harris said the event was a great success for local motorsport.

"It was a huge crowd for a first night, there was heaps of action, after three rollovers they definitely got their money's worth," Harris said.

Blackburn said the race has generated new local interest in speedway racing.

"There's been quite a lot of people ask me how they can get into it," Blackburn said.

"We have practice races on December 8, so there's a meeting at the track this Thursday, at 6pm, for anyone who wants to get in and start racing.

"The Outlaw Sedan class is a good way to start. Most road legal cars can race in this class."

Spectators will be admitted free at the practice event, with racing to start at 6pm.
