Whincup looks set to secure V8 Supercar victory in Sydney

ONLY the most extraordinary bad luck can stop Jamie Whincup from winning the 2012 V8 Supercars drivers championship in Sydney this weekend.

The Holden ace leads the series by 317 points from Mark Winterbottom, and with a total of 300 points up for grabs in the two races at Olympic Park, only two disastrous races and a points penalty could stop Whincup from winning.

But bad luck in Sydney is something the 29-year-old has been familiar with in recent years.

The circuit remains the only one on the 2012 schedule where Whincup has never won a race.

He has crashed in two of the six races he has contested at the venue and has an average finishing position of 10.4 with one 'did not finish'.

His best finishing position has been fifth (twice).

With the series all but decided, significant interest will be centred on the battle between Holden and Ford given it will be the last time the two iconic Australian marques go head-to-head before Nissan and Mercedes join the fray next year.

Holden has a chance of finishing the year 1-2 with third-placed Craig Lowndes trailing Ford's Winterbottom by 63 points.
