1960s is Australia's best decade for summer music anthems

RESEARCH conducted by Coca-Cola and released yesterday has revealed the 1960s is the best decade for summer music anthems, according to Australians.

That era of music beat every decade for best summer songs since the 1950s.

The 1960s received the vast majority of votes with 41%, and the next most popular decade (the 1980s) received only half that amount of votes with 19%.

The majority of people surveyed (92%) agree a classic summer song has the power to transport them back to a past summer memory.

The survey also shows that 1960s music is still what the majority of Australians of all ages listen to in summer, even younger generations.

"Even the majority of Gen Y selected the '60s as the decade that produced the best summer songs, despite not being born when they were released," Coca-Cola South Pacific Marketing Manager Antoinette Tyrell said.

Over the past few months Coca-Cola has encouraged Australians to celebrate music by featuring the years from 1938 to 2012 on selected packs, and allowing them to unlock and listen to 50 songs from each year.

More than one million songs have been streamed from the Share a Coke and a Song packs.
