71-year-old woman found dead in suspicious circumstances

TOWNSVILLE detectives are appealing for public assistance following the suspicious death of a woman in Heatley yesterday.

Police established a crime scene after being called to a Dalrymple Road home around 2.20pm where they discovered the body of a 71-year-old local woman.

Northern Regional Crime Coordinator Detective Acting Superintendent Cheryl Scanlon said police would like to speak to anyone who may have seen a blue Holden Astra hatchback in Townsville yesterday.

"As part of our ongoing investigation, we impounded a vehicle after locating it on Caroline Street in Aitkenvale around 4pm yesterday. This vehicle is owned by the deceased woman.

"It is important for us to be able to trace this vehicle's movements before it made its way there - specifically the two hours immediately prior.

"We're asking for anyone who spotted a blue Holden Astra hatchback in Townsville's suburbs yesterday between 10.30am and 4pm to let us know.

"We know a vehicle matching that description was spotted in Railway Estate yesterday and local residents interacted with an occupant. Some of those people have already been interviewed by investigators."

A man and a woman are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

A post-mortem examination of the deceased will be conducted later today.
