Fireworks a no-go for parts of Victoria as fire threat looms
NEW Year's Eve fireworks could be cancelled in areas of Victoria and South Australia as the states brace for hot and windy weather and total fire bans.
The Victorian Country Fire Authority recommended yesterday that residents of Kennett River, Grey River and Wongara - all in the area of the Great Ocean Road fires of the past week - leave the area.
Incident controller Alistair Drayton said several hotspots could flare up.
"There is potential the fire could run again and we don't want to take any risk having our community members in these areas," he said.
The South Australian Country Fire Service also expected to declare total fire bans for some areas today.
Fire crews were still working yesterday to contain the Otway fire that destroyed 116 houses at Wye River and Separation Creek on Christmas Day.
The blaze in inaccessible dense forest has grown by about 500ha in the past few days to 2800ha.
