Gillard to make first public appearance since ousting

FORMER prime minister Julia Gillard will speak publicly for the first time since losing the leadership when she makes two live appearances, including one at the Sydney Opera House, later this month.

Ms Gillard will spend 90 minutes in conversation with author and publisher Anne Summers - a staunch feminist and one of its most strident defenders - discussing the former PM's time in office and what it was like being the first Australian woman to lead the country.

Dr Summers revealed on Tuesday Ms Gillard would also take questions from the audience following their chats.

The Opera House event will take place on September 30, with the pair to appear again the following day at Melbourne Town Hall.

Other than the occasional tweet, including a number of gracious contributions on election night, Ms Gillard has been largely silent since her June 26 leadership showdown with Kevin Rudd.

"I am sure we all remember her dignified farewell speech that evening," Dr Summers wrote.

"I invite you to a very special evening with Julia Gillard for one night only in Sydney and Melbourne. It will be our chance to see and hear Ms Gillard and be able to see for ourselves how she is faring post politics.

"Ms Gillard has agreed to a candid and wide-ranging conversation about her time in office and what it like being the first woman to lead our county."

The Melbourne event sold out on Tuesday, while only a few Opera House tickets remained.

There have been suggestions one or both of the events could be filmed and possibly live streamed.
