Govt accused of burying gas emission report

THE Climate Council has accused the Federal Government of burying a report that reveals Australia's emissions have increased.

Professor Will Steffen said it was disappointing the government had chosen to release the Quarterly Update of Australia's Greenhouse Gas Inventory on Christmas Eve.

The report, covering the quarter up until June this year, shows the country's annual emissions increasing by 1.3% in 2015 compared to 2014. It listed the 2014-15 year emissions as the second lowest since 2000.

"In the fortnight since the Paris climate talks ... the Australian Government has approved another coalmine, approved plans to expand a coal port next to the Great Barrier Reef and attempted to bury statistics which show our emissions continue to rise since the repeal of the carbon price," Prof Steffen said.
