Major brawls hit both Melbourne and Sydney

POLICE do not believe two brawls in the Melbourne and Sydney CBDs on the weekend are linked.

At Melbourne's annual Moomba Festival, about 200 members of rival gangs brawled in the CBD on Saturday night.

Police used batons and pepper spray to break up the fights.

The brawl in Sydney about 3am yesterday involved about 30 people and spread on to three streets.

Two men have been charged with assaulting and resisting police.

Sydney police said the Melbourne incident was not part of their investigation.
