Marriage equality could be law by the end of the year

THOUSANDS of people rallying for marriage equality gathered in Sydney on Sunday.

The protestors called for the government to support a bill allowing same-sex marriage, which will be introduced in parliament today.

At the rally, deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek said the change to the Marriage Act to allow same-sex couples to marry had to be bipartisan, and called for the Coalition to support it.

She said if the bill went through, the law could be introduced by the end of the year.
