Miner to be sentenced for drug trafficking does a runner

A FORMER Gladstone miner who was due to be sentenced in relation to drug trafficking charges has failed to turn up to court.

A warrant for his arrest has been issued.

Caloundra man Shannon Lee Watt, 27, pleaded guilty earlier this year in the Brisbane Supreme Court to a host of drug offences committed between May 17, 2012, and August 22, 2012, at Kings Beach on the Sunshine Coast.

He claimed his foray into the Sunshine Coast drug world only occurred after learning his partner, who is the mother of his infant child, had cheated on him while he was working in Gladstone.

Watt, who was due to be sentenced on Monday, sat in court for three hours and watched two other drug associates Julia-Kate Alison Sparks and Michael David Scott being sentenced for similar offences after all were captured in a police operation.

The court adjourned for lunch, but when it resumed Watt was nowhere to be seen.

Defence barrister Douglas Wilson told the court when it resumed that his client had informed him he would not be returning to the court complex.

"He was here this morning, but just told me he will not be returning for sentencing," he said.

"I cannot say as to why."

Crown Prosecutor Sarah Klemm immediately sought a warrant for Watt's arrest which Justice Alan Wilson granted.

Watt was granted bail in September last year after telling the Brisbane Supreme Court he was free from drugs and that he realised he had hurt his family, friends and himself.

He spent six months behind bars from the time of his arrest to subsequently being granted bail.
