Queensland mum named mother of the year

A QUEENSLANDER who balances foster caring for three child with supporting her elderly mother and widowed sister was named Barnardos Mother the Year on Sunday.

Leanne Robson, who lives just south of Brisbane, was nominated for the award by husband and shift-working police officer Geoff.

Mrs Robson celebrated her Mother's Day with top mums from other states and territories at Kirribilli House, with Prime Minister Tony Abbott handing her the award.

Having already raised her two children to adulthood, about eight years ago, Mrs Robson took on foster caring for three young children.

Mr Robson said she balanced the foster care with supporting him in his 24-hour rotational shift work, as well as helping with her widowed mother and recently-widowed sister.

"She is an excellent mother and wife and would be embarrassed as all heck if she knew she was nominated," he said.

Mr Abbott said the finalists for the award came from very different backgrounds, but all shared a common "deep and abiding love for the children entrusted to them".

"They are women who look after their own children sometimes in difficult circumstances, in the face of tragedy, and who care for other children who are in need of a mother," he said.

The other finalists were: Chauntell McNamara (ACT), Sidona Hodge (NSW), Jenne Roberts (NT), Rachel Mayes (SA), Lisa King (TAS), Dreena Lawrence-Gray (VIC) and Anne Caldwell (WA). - APN Newsdesk
