Child rapist expected to be jailed

A MAN who raped a seven-year-old girl and fondled her 11-year-old sister while they were in his care is expected to be jailed today.

The 55-year-old man yesterday admitted to raping the younger girl after a jury found him guilty of indecently fondling her sister.

The offences occurred between 2005-2007 when the man dated the girls' mother, a Hervey Bay woman.

It took the jury just two hours to convict the man on two counts of indecent dealing with a child under 16 following the two-day trial in the Hervey Bay District Court.

The man was found to have fondled the 11-year-old's breasts and genitals on two separate occasions between 2005-07.

During the same timeframe, he digitally raped the younger girl when her mother was at work.

The incident occurred when the girl was using a laptop computer and the man invited her to sit on his knee so he could also use the computer.

He then placed his hand down her pants.

He pleaded guilty to one count of rape and one of indecently dealing with a child under 12 who was in his care.

The second charge related to a separate incident in which the man again placed his hands down the young girl's pants.

She was lying on a mattress with him at his home and they were watching a movie under a doona at the time.

The girl's older sister then entered the room and, after noticing her sister's "scared" look, lifted the blanket and saw what was happening.

The man is a father of one who now lives at Caboolture.

His wife of two years was present in court for the duration of the trial.

Judge Leanne Clare yesterday heard submissions from the prosecution and defence that the man should be jailed for between 3-4 years.

Crown prosecutor Jacob Robson described the offences as "brazen".

"They're clearly quite brazen, (and) occurred without regard to the fact other children were present," he said.

"Of course, there's (also) a significant element of breach of trust."

Judge Clare is expected to hand down her sentence this morning.
