ABC and SBS merger could save both, report says

MERGING the ABC and SBS could help remove advertising from SBS and build "political security" for both broadcasters, a report says.

An Australia Institute report has looked at options for changes to the broadcasters including the merger of management, back-office staff and online functions, as well as a complete merger.

Any merger posed "risks to the quality and diversity of content", the report found, and back-office mergers would save little money.

However, a full merger would remove ads, speed the transition to digital-first news and "provide financial and political security".
