AUSTRALIAN air traffic controllers are now in full Christmas mode, preparing to ensure Santa has a safe journey when he enters our skies late on Christmas Eve.

Airservices Australia helps guide millions of flights each year, but each of those are important, only Santa travels in a sleigh filled with gifts.

Ahead of his arrival later this month, air traffic controllers with Airservices Australia have shed a little light on how Santa's sleigh is able to fly safely.

"Santa has given us special permission to share with you some of the very important non magical features on his sleigh.

"With some state-of-the-art features, such as its high-tech navigation equipment and flight management system, his sleigh is surely one of the most advanced in the skies on Christmas eve."

Airservices has released a series of artist impressions to best explain how Santa's sleigh works, and the positioning of his key reindeer propulsion system.

Airservices manager Mairi Barton said air traffic controllers and other staff working "behind the scenes" made sure Santa and his reindeers travelled safely, making a flight safety plan and checking it twice.

The sleigh will be tracked by the new Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast, which currently watches all planes in Australia's skies.
