BE CAREFUL if you buy an alpaca for a pet, because you could find yourself biting off more than you can chew.

That was the message from Nanango alpaca enthusiasts John and Trish Elliot as they celebrated Alpaca Week, and recounted how they went from two alpacas to 56.

"Alpacas are worse than drugs," John said.

"You become totally addicted."

The couple aren't complaining about their alpaca herd and despite the work load love every single one of them.

They got their first two alpacas while living in Burnett Heads and were looking for a unique pet.

But as their love of the quirky animals grew they needed to expand their property to accommodate the growing herd.

"We thought they were lovely animals and we had to look for something bigger for them," Trish said.

She said it was their playful personality that she fell in love with and that she remembers all of their 56 alpacas by name.

But despite their love of all their animals, Trish said the numbers were currently higher than usual because of a broken fence last year.

Usually the males and females are separated at their property but one night the animals pushed the fence down.

"When we came home the girls were having a good time with the boys," Trish laughed.

"Eleven babies came from that; the boys must have worked overtime."
