Ankle injury to sideline Giants AFL star

AFL: GWS has been dealt a major blow on the eve of Round 1 with gun midfielder Stephen Coniglio to miss at least six weeks with an ankle injury.

Coniglio suffered the injury in the Giants' final JLT Series game against North Melbourne ahead of their season opener, with confirmation on Monday there is damage to the syndesmosis.

The star midfielder suffered the high ankle injury in the third term on Saturday and was the leading disposal winner on the ground at the time with 21.

"We're obviously disappointed for Stephen after he put in a really strong pre-season," GWS athletic performance boss David Joyce said.

"He'll spend the next two weeks in a protective boot and progress from there.

"We're confident that with the right treatment he'll be back on the field in a bit over a month."

Coniglio's injury is similar to one suffered by Carlton's Marc Murphy in Round 10 last year, which resulted in the skipper missing the remainder of the season.

Collingwood defender Tom Langdon also suffered a syndesmosis injury in Round 8 and also didn't play again last year with a combination of the ankle injury and a knee issue.

In better news for the Giants veteran forward Steve Johnson is expected to play Round 1 despite suffering concussion against the Kangaroos.

Johnson will be closely monitored this week before ramping up training ahead of GWS's season opener against Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.
