Miguel Maestre has an appetite for motoring quality

FINE food is a way of life for Spanish chef Miguel Maestre.

And it seems the Channel 10 star likes his vehicles equally interesting.

What was your first car?

My first car was a Mercedes 1979, 300 diesel, dark blue metallic; it made the best sound.

So big, and it felt like driving around in a big sofa chair.

When I went from Spain to the UK to work, my dad kept that car for me. He washed it and looked after it for years, and when I decided to move to Australia we sold it. I wish I still had that car. So many beautiful memories ... it would be a classic now.

What are you driving now?

I drive a Mercedes CLK V6 320 Cabriolet Elegance. I love everything about it. I call it Purple Rain (yep, it's purple). We also have a Range Rover Sport for family driving.

What cars did your family have while you were growing up?

My dad always had a big Mercedes for the family and a big van for the business. I used to love to drive the van when I was little with my dad. He taught me to drive and that's one of my best memories, sitting on my dad's lap steering the big wheel.

What is your greatest frustration on the road and why?

I can't stand people that take two spaces for parking. No consideration. Or people that park too close to your door that you can't get in the car and you can't get your kids in and out of their car seats.

Do you have any preferred driving music?

Spanish flamenco music, I love the sound of Spanish guitar, it is very good for driving long distances.

If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be and why?

I'd love to go with my Living Room family - Amanda, Barry and Gringo (Gringo is Miguel's name for Chris Brown). It would be so much fun in the same car.

What is your dream car and why?

I always wanted to have a TVR Tuscan. When I worked in Scotland at the restaurant, Indigo Yard all the cool TVRs used to park in the door of the restaurant. Their sound and their look was stunning. As an apprentice chef I saw them every day and would dream of one day owning one.

I always wanted a Range Rover too, when I was a little boy I had a Range Rover toy car and I would tell my dad that one day I would drive one.

I was so happy when we bought a Range Rover as our family car. Sometimes dreams really do come true.

He has worked in Sydney's premier kitchens, but in 2010 Miguel opened his first restaurant, El Toro Loco (The Crazy Bull).
