AFTER a year of curating and supporting works at the Toowoomba gallery No Comply, Alysa Timmer is curating and showcasing her own artwork at tonight's exhibition Fastplant.

Working behind-the-scenes as an intern with gallery co-ordinator Grace Dewar, Ms Timmer said she was excited to be an artist in the space that had built up her arts practice.

She is currently working on a Diploma of Arts.

Ms Timmer stepped up at the gallery, taking her creative drive from work experience to a paid position and emerging career in the arts.

She said while her work had been shown in group exhibitions in other venues, tonight was a chance join other artists on the walls.

"I like working in portraits, and the shape of the board changed how I designed the work," she said.

"I also like to work in non-traditional skin tones and colours to create something different."

More than 100 artists have taken the challenge to create an artwork for the exhibition in the 3D medium.

Toowoomba's established artists such as Sandy Pottinger join a range of east coast artists from Cairns, Bundaberg, the Sunshine Coast, Lismore, the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Works will show both on the gallery inside and along the legal graffiti wall outside.

The decks mounted on the outdoor wall transform the Kontraband venue for one night, before that wall is repainted and the works re-installed inside.

Ms Dewar said Fastplant, the exhibition series now in its third year, was carrying on the tradition.

The first skate deck exhibition organised by Kontraband members was held at the Grid Hybrid Arts Space and featured 25 boards.

"We don't often offer group exhibitions here so this round is a free-for-all, and what we've had come back is a diverse mix of sculpture, construction and fun," she said.

Artists had just eight weeks to deck out their boards for the show.

Fastplant opens tonight at 6 Laurel St at 8 o'clock.
