Aussie bikies allegedly attempted to shoot mafia member

TWO accused Australian bikies, a member of the Danish mafia and an alleged feud over money and a motorcycle are at the centre of a shooting investigation on the popular holiday island of Phuket.

Adam Lewis Shea, 26, from NSW, and John Edward Cohen, 33, of Tasmania, attempted to shoot a member of the Danish mafia when two German tourists were caught in the crossfire, Thai police allege.

The men, who are believed to have links to an outlaw motorcycle gang in Australia and own a tattoo parlour at Patong beach, were involved in heated talks with a man named Dannie over a motorcycle before the argument turned violent, the Phuket Gazette reported.

The two then allegedly chased Dannie, shots were fired but the target was missed and two tourists were hit by stray bullets.

The injured men, Johann Baschenegger, 42, and Joseph Woerner, 71, were treated in hospital for non-life threatening injures.

Police told the Gazette the Australians and Dannie were expected to front a Thai court on Tuesday to sort out a dispute over a large sum of money, but Dannie never showed.

Deputy Commander Arun Kleawwatee said Mr Cohen had told officers Dannie had sent mafia members to his Phuket home and fearing they were going to be attacked, he and his friend simply "made the first move".

The men have been charged with attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

Thai news reports varied about whether the bikie gang involved was the Rebels or Bandindos.
