500 jobs in limbo as Qld coal boss makes corruption claim

THE man behind a massive Bowen Basin mine tipped to add at least $15 million a month in royalties to the state's coffers and create more than 500 jobs has called in the Crime and Corruption Commission as he battles to get his project off the ground.

QCoal managing director Christopher Wallin - one of the state's richest men - has applied to mine coking coal, used to make steel, on land in the mineral rich basin west of Mackay.

But he says he is being hamstrung by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, who he alleges is not following its own rules under the Mineral Resources Act.

In dispute is a parcel of land over which fellow miner Glencore is currently hauling coal.

Mr Wallin said his company Byerwen applied for a mining lease over that land 12 months before Glencore did.
