THE average Australian household spent $99 a week on power bills and car fuel in 2012, a new report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed.

Data in the report revealed an average of $39 a week was spent on electricity and gas at home, and up to $60 a week was spent on fuel by average households last year.

It also reveals the southern states, on average, faced higher electricity costs - in part due to the cooler temperatures.

The report found households in the Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania and parts of Victoria and south New South Wales had the highest costs, spending $47 a week on energy.

In contrast, cities like Perth and Sydney in more temperate zones had the lowest overall costs, spending $36 a week on energy.

And families who installed solar electricity or hot water systems were saving - to the tune of $6 a week or more than $300 a year.

The study found those paying a mortgage had the highest energy costs, at $123 a week, while public housing tenants had the lowest, spending just $56 a week on energy in 2012.
