Australian lawyer in Libya 'safe'

AUSTRALIAN Foreign Minister Bob Carr has been assured the Australian lawyer being detained in Libya is "safe and well".

Melinda Taylor, a lawyer with the International Criminal Court, was detained on Thursday for alleged breaches of Libyan national security.

She was in Libya was as part of a four-person ICC legal team ahead of proceedings against Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, son of former ruler Muammar Gaddafi.

Senator Carr said he raised concerns for Ms Taylor's safety during a phone call with Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister Muhamed Aziz on Sunday night.

Mr Aziz confirmed Ms Taylor was being held in Zintan pending further inquiries.

"Mr Aziz assured me that she is safe and well," Senator Carr said.

"I emphasised our strong interest in seeing the matter resolved quickly and urged Mr Aziz to facilitate full consular access to Ms Taylor."

Senator Carr also spoke with International Criminal Court president Judge Song to ensure everything possible was being done to help Ms Taylor and her three ICC colleagues.

"An ICC team is in Libya to engage directly with authorities on the matter," Senator Carr said.

"We expect that direct contact be made with Ms Taylor by the ICC team as quickly as possible."

Senator Carr spoke with Ms Taylor's husband on Sunday night to brief him on the latest developments.

Ms Taylor's parents issued a statement on Monday asking for the media to respect their privacy.

"Our thoughts, at this time, are very much with our daughter, Melinda, and her colleagues," the statement read.

"We do not wish to comment publicly on her situation at this time."
