Australia among least likely to live up to climate promises

AUSTRALIA'S efforts on climate change have been recognised as among the four nations worldwide least likely to achieve their international promises.

A report from the United Nation's environment program on the global "emissions gap" found Australia was unlikely to meet its commitments on cutting carbon emissions.

It found Australia, Mexico, the United States and Canada were "likely to require further action" including buying more emissions offsets to meet the 2020 targets.

The report comes days after the US and China signed a joint deal to reduce their carbon emissions, and rejects previous claims the government's Direct Action plan or other efforts will reach the 5% reduction by the 2020 target.
