Teen takes selfie while smoking cannabis, busted by police

IN a teen's world where image is everything there are kool selfies, snap chats, eye-popping photo bombs, and then there is Aiden Johnston's photo bong.

The 18-year-old Gladstone lad took a happy snap on his smart phone smoking cannabis.

But the selfie puff snap proved not to be a bright idea.

A curious police officer who flipped through his phone snaps during a search of his home easily found it.

In Gladstone Magistrates Court, police prosecutor Gavin Reece said images on his mobile phone showed a well-cared for marijuana plant and Johnston smoking cannabis.

"He says it was cannabis, a picture of him smoking grass," Mr Reece said.

Both Johnston and his mother were detained during the search, and Mr Reece said police found two mature well-cared for marijuana plants in the backyard, 62cm and 60cm tall.

Johnston pleaded guilty before magistrate Penelope Hay to one charge of producing dangerous drugs on February 25.

Lawyer Dave McHenry said Johnston was disgusted with himself and that he had brought embarrassment to his family.

"He was told the easiest way (to get the drug) is to grow your own," Mr McHenry said.

"It had grown so rapidly he was about to get rid of it."

Johnston had also been told to stay home because of the embarrassment he had caused.

Ms Hay said Johnston had no criminal history other than a public nuisance offence, was young, and also been punished by his household.

She warned him that he did not want to start out in adult life with a criminal history because of his good prospects.

"Keep yourself out of trouble.

"Focus on useful ways to entertain yourself and stop frustrating your parents with your conduct."

Johnston was fined $400, a conviction not recorded.
