Bart’s ‘free hit’ in Cox Plate chase

Lindsey Smith says he has nothing to lose after paying the $200,000 late nomination fee for Black Heart Bart to contest the Cox Plate.

It is now up to the Moonee Valley Racing Club committee to decide on Tuesday whether to include the nine-year-old in the 14-horse field for the $5 million weight-for-age-championship.

Black Heart Bart is among eight horses chasing up to five spots.

International invitees Lys Gracieux, Kluger and Danceteria are guaranteed starters along with Homesman, Cape Of Good Of Hope and Harlem, who won ballot-exempt races.

Avilius, Mystic Journey and Kings Will Dream are expected to be included.

Smith said recent form was in Black Heart Bart's favour.

Black Heart Bart won the Group 1 Underwood Stakes which was followed by a narrow second to Cape Of Good Hope in the Caulfield Classic, finishing ahead of Avilius, Homesman, Harlem and Humidor.

Those two performances earned Black Heart Bart $632,000 in prizemoney, handing connections a "free hit" to get him into the Cox Plate.

They will have their late entry fee refunded if Black Heart Bart is left out of the field.

"I only go on current form and he beat (Avilius) home, he beat Homesman.

"He hasn't gone backwards and I'm pretty happy where I sit. And as I said, he's beat some of the top five in betting over the same distance with the same weight and a track he's won on.

"I've got nothing to lose. It's a free hit for me because he's won the stake money I didn't think he would."

However, Smith said he won't be disappointed if his horse was overlooked.

"Fingers crossed he gets in it. I never nominated the first time so if I was to get shut-out I could understand that," Smith said.

"My horse is in good form and he's held his form at home.

"He won't look out of place in the mounting yard."
