BBQ to celebrate historic win and new beginnings

A HISTORIC moment in South Burnett rugby league history will be celebrated tomorrow.

Forty years ago the Cherbourg Hornets under-18 won their first premiership against Murgon.

Current Hornets' A-grade coach Frank Malone said he played for the U18s in the 1976 premiership squad.

"We were coached by a blind man, Cyril Fisher," Malone said.

"He had a commentator, they would commentate the game to him."

Four decades later Cherbourg and Murgon have combined to make up the South Burnett Blue U18 team, which will play in the Toowoomba competition.

To celebrate the occasion Malone said a barbecue will be had tomorrow after training at the Hornets' home ground, Jack O'Chin Oval at Cherbourg.
