BIG FISH: Reckon you can beat this freshwater monster?

RECKON you could catch a bigger freshwater fish than Eddie Zoet?

The Highfields man and keen angler enjoyed a perfect Christmas present after he scored this monster yellowbelly (left) last weekend at Cooby Dam with his mates.

Measuring 52cm, Mr Zoet said it was the biggest fish he'd ever caught at the site.

"It's pretty big - it's the biggest I caught in Cooby," he said.

"I caught it off the platoon. There's a drop-off there and we threw our lines in there."

Fishing with both freshwater shrimp and salt-water yabbies on the same hook, Mr Zoet said he initially thought his line was snagged.

"I thought I had the line caught, he was pulling very hard. He put on a bit of a fight," he said.

"We were very surprised because it was a fair-sized fish.

"Normally we catch around the 40cm, but this was quite big."

Mr Zoet, who works as a printer in the CBD, said he normally headed out to the dam every weekend to catch fish.

Unsurprisingly, Mr Zoet will be cooking the whole yellowbelly in the oven.
