UPDATE: Bill Roberts will be farewelled at a memorial service at Murgon Town Hall on Monday.

The service will be held from 12.30pm.

EARLIER: FORMER Murgon Shire Council chairman, long-standing South Burnett Times columnist and South Burnett icon Bill Roberts has passed away at the age of 92.

Bill was born in Brisbane on April 22, 1925.

He served on the council as chairman and mayor from 1972-2000, in addition to positions in countless Murgon community groups including Apex and Rotary. 

Up until last month, Bill had written the South Burnett Times column Hub Rattles for 58 continuous years.

Former Kingaroy Shire Council chairman and Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss paid tribute to Bill on Facebook.

The funeral date is to be advised.
