Driver caught steering with elbow while eating a hamburger

CATCHING drivers using their mobile phones may make up the majority of driver distraction cases but Mackay police have also caught drivers using their elbows to steer while eating a hamburger and even driving while putting make-up on using the rear view mirror.

More than a third of Australian drivers admit they don't try to obey the road rules when it comes to distractions while a quarter admit they frequently talk or text while driving, according to figures from road safety program CARMA.

Mackay Road Policing Unit's Sergeant Gerry Doyle said so far this year, police in the Mackay district had caught 661 drivers using their mobile phones while driving.

"It is a lot and that just goes to show that a lot of people don't consider the consequences of their actions," Sgt Doyle said.

He said people continued to ignore the safety messages about the dangers of driving while distracted because "people think nothing is going to happen to them".

Driving while using mobile phones are "dangerous actions" that have resulted in deaths, he said.

"People need to understand this is a serious offence," Sgt Doyle said.

Road Accident Action Group (RAAG) road safety co-ordinator Graeme Ransley said combating the problem wasn't just about enforcement but also education, especially for school-aged students.
