Flowers equal happiness on Mother's Day

FAMILY-owned business Starcut Flowers does not leave anything to chance when it comes to Mother's Day.

Phil Starrett said preparations for their busiest day of the year had started straight after last Mother's Day.

Now with less than a week to go staff numbers have increased and the orders are starting to come in.

Mr Starrett said organisation was the key to getting through Mother's Day and out the other side.

"My sister Monique, she does all the ordering because the flowers double in price from where we purchase them from. You have to get the ordering right," he said.

"She writes down every year what we get and then we do a bit of a review after each Mother's Day to make sure the ordering was enough or not enough.

"Through the year we pick our suppliers and our wholesalers to buy from where there is the best quality."

Mr Starrett said they preferred to purchase flowers from Queensland growers.

"We are growers ourselves, and we try and promote Australian-grown flowers as much as we can," he said.

"Ninety-nine percent of our flowers are grown here in Queensland so we spend a lot of time and effort trying to source from growers.

"We don't like using imported flowers."

So why do flowers make the perfect gift for Mother's Day?

"Flowers are a gift from your feelings, from your heart," Mr Starrett said.

"I see the look on people's faces when you deliver flowers and there is always a smile. When you buy someone flowers, that's what it is - it's happiness."

Don't despair if you haven't made an order yet - Starcut Flowers will be open all week, including Sunday.

Orders can be made by going into the shop, online or by phoning.

Mother's Day is Sunday.

CHRYSANTHEMUM is the flower of choice for Mother's Day in Australia.

While any flowers are sure to be appreciated, the chrysanthemum is the traditional type of flower to give.

Starcut flowers florist Liana Bonham said other popular types for Mother's Day was anything well-known, which included roses, gerberas and lilies.

The chrysanthemum is the tradition flower to give for Mother's Day because it is in season during autumn.

Phil Starrett, also of Starcut Flowers in Mackay, said they were likely to sell close to 250 bunches of chrysanthemums in the lead up to the day and go through 20 to 25 cartons of flowers.

He said for a regular week the shop went through about three or four cartons of flowers in total.
