Boy, 13, critical after ski park jump goes horribly wrong

UPDATE 2pm: The 13-year-old boy who suffered severe head injuries along with complications from his near-drowning is now in a stable condition.

A Lady Cilento Children's Hospital spokesman today confirmed the boy remained in hospital.

EARLIER 10.30am: A teenage boy has nearly drowned and been airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries after attempting a jump at a Sunshine Coast waterski park.

The 13-year-old was attempting a jump at the Bli Bli Watersports park when he fell and hit his head yesterday, just after 4pm, and almost drowned before onlookers could reach him.

The LifeFlight critical care doctor and Queensland Ambulance Service paramedic rushed to the scene by road, as the park was close to the LifeFlight base at the Sunshine Coast Airport.

They treated the boy for his serious head injuries, as well as complications resulting from the near-drowning.

The doctor and paramedic then travelled with the patient by road ambulance to Sunshine Coast University Hospital, where medical staff decided he should be flown to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane.

The Sunshine Coast-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue aeromedical crew flew the 22-minute mission from Maroochydore to Brisbane, and the boy travelled in a critical condition.
