Boys playing with lighter spark suburban bushfire

A YOUNG boy has told police how playing with a lighter led to a fire that threatened homes and property at Sippy Downs.

Sunshine Coast Child Protection Investigation Unit officer Detective Senior Constable John Lichy said officers had interviewed a youth about a bushfire that burned on University of the Sunshine Coast land on Thursday last week.

The fire came particularly close to homes on Statesmen Circuit, prompting residents to evacuate their homes.

At least one back fence had burn marks on it.

Det Snr Const Lichy said it appeared at least two boys had been playing with a lighter and had set fire to a paperbark tree.

"They tried to stop it," Det Snr Const Lichy said.

"Being so dry it just got away."

He said the 13-year-old boy had not been charged but would be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justices Act.

He said that could involve meeting with firefighters so they could explain to him the effects of bushfires.

"Parents need to be more aware of what their kids are doing," he said.
