Burnett teachers to go on strike next term

QUEENSLAND teachers are planning to stop work for a period of 24 hours in the first week of term three.

Queensland Teachers Union members who are employed by the Department of Education are directed to stop work for the day on Thursday, July 18.

This will include teachers at all state schools in the South Burnett.

Murgon State High School principal Simon Cotton notified the school community about the strike on Facebook this afternoon.

"I need to inform all parents and caregivers that Queensland Teachers Union members will go out on protected industrial action, a strike, in the first week of term three," he said.

More information regarding the strike will be provided to the school communities as it becomes available.

The Queensland Teacher's Union said the planned strike could be averted, but only if the Queensland Government made an offer that adequately addressed four key elements.

These include the establishment of a new classification structure for promotional positions with salaries that match the value of the role, comparable to similar positions interstate.

The union is also asking for the workload for teachers, heads of programs and school leaders to be addressed.

They are also requesting gender employment inequity be addressed.
