Brisbane's peak hour is dead. It now lasts four hours

Brisbane's peak hour traffic now lasts four hours each day

AVOIDING peak hour has become all-but-impossible for Brisbane-bound commuters, with the RACQ crunching the numbers to find the peak now starts at 5am, an hour earlier than five years ago.

Drivers hoping to escape the crawl of bumper-to-bumper traffic jams are often running a fool's errand, with data showing that congestion starts at 5am and only begins to ease after 9am on the Pacific Motorway.

The RACQ also found the Bruce Highway between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast was "another hot spot for congestion".

"Motorists are being forced to leave home earlier just to try and beat gridlock into the CBD," according to RACQ general manager of advocacy Paul Turner.

"There really is no such thing as a peak hour in Brisbane anymore. The shoulder periods now carry almost as much traffic."

He said it only takes a single accident between Caboolture and the Gateway Motorway and drivers will be left trapped in a traffic snarl.

"There is just no alternative for people community from the north to Brisbane."

Data obtained by RACQ from the Department of Transport and Main Roads at the Pacific Motorway at Underwood Rd overpass. The volumes are vehicles per hour during weekday traffic.

"Just ten percent of south east Queensland residents opt to travel by public transport. This has to be fixed."

"We need everyone working together to ensure all the transportation networks function as one."

"If we don't plan for the future and put in infrastructure that will provide realistic solutions for south east Queensland our congestion problem will become dire."
