A BUNDABERG driver has been caught doing more than double the legal speed limit on a busy Bundaberg street.

Police stopped a 17-year-old Bundaberg North man driving a 2006 silver Holden Commodore sedan after he was detected with a speed of 148kmh in a 60kmh zone.

The man was intercepted about 10:50pm last night on FE Walker Street, Bundaberg South.

The driver was issued with a traffic infringement notice for $1099 and eight demerit points.

Bundaberg police officer in charge Senior Sergeant Erwin Hoffmann said the attitude of the driver was frustrating and showed no consideration to the rest of the community.

"This is a ridiculously high speed, and without the intervention of police could have resulted in fatalities. People that commit such brazen acts have no concern for the welfare of the rest of the community and are putting their own and their friends' lives at risk," said Snr Sgt Hoffman.

He is not the first driver to be caught speeding excessively in the region.
