Bureau expects cyclone to form on Sunday

The first cyclone of the season is likely to form in the Gulf of Carpenteria but will not directly threaten the Queensland coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology started tracking a tropical low near Katherine heading east about 5.30am.

According to the bureau, it is expected to form into a Category 1 cyclone when it reaches the gulf before crossing the coast near Borroloola on the Northern Territory side of the border with Queensland.

The tropical low is expected to reach the gulf on Saturday and the cyclone forming Sunday morning.

If the cyclone forms it will be the first one near the Queensland coast this season.

The bureau has issued a strong wind warning for north east gulf for today and tomorrow.
