Business boom fuels hotel expansion

GROUND has been broken on a $1.2 million expansion to one of the largest motels in the South Burnett.

Approval was granted late last year for Room Motels to expand its Kingaroy facility.

The expansion will add an extra eight rooms to the motel, bringing the count to 36 rooms when finished.

Room Motels owner Colin Buckley said construction started at the Youngman St site two weeks ago.

"We want it to be finished around late May or early June," Mr Buckley said.

Corporate customers fuelled the growth of the business, and Mr Buckley said there had been many times in the past 12 months it had been at capacity.

"We really need those extra rooms now," he said.

Although maintenance at Tarong Power Station had meant a steady flow of customers, he said it was the corporate customers they targeted.

"It's going to be corporate customers that keep us here, not the shutdowns (at the power station)," he said.

The expanded site is being built next to the current motel and will be connected when construction is finished.

A majority of locals are being used for the job.

Mr Buckley said "about 90%" of the staff hired for the construction would be from the South Burnett.
