"Lazy, bloody mongrel" vanpackers flee Byron for the hills
AFTER a council crackdown on vanpackers illegally camping and defecating in public in downtown Byron Bay, some campers appear to have moved location and are now set up with the best free views over the bay.
Up to 20 vanpackers a night are setting up camp at the Bangalow Rd lay-by at Coopers Shoot, overlooking Byron Bay. And nearby residents are irate.
"I drove past this morning and there was one guy with his pants down defecating on the side of the road in full view of traffic," a Coopers Shoot resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said.
"They don't care who sees them. It was absolutely disgusting.
"Lazy, bloody mongrel losers. We are sick to death of them freeloading off the ratepayers. They treat this town as a toilet."
The resident said he had seen a dramatic increase in the number of vans parked in the lay-by since the council increased ranger patrols at another popular vanpacking spot near Tennyson St, Byron Bay.
"Ever since they were kicked out of Tennyson St they've moved up here," he said.
"I'm not condemning the rangers, they do a brilliant job - but the council needs to fund more rangers.
"The situation is snowballing and they could cause an accident up there ... put some signs up there at least."
Byron Shire Council's governance manager Ralph James said a number of complaints about the campers had been received.
"Rangers visited the site on Monday and found nine people camped in the area," Mr James said.
"Each person was issued with a warning and the licence plate number recorded.
"'No camping' signage has also been requested to be installed at the site and rangers will include the area as part of their regular patrols."
