Canada and US talks focus on climate change

IN THE first visit by a Canadian PM to the White House in nearly 20 years, tackling climate change has been the main focus.

The two nations have agreed to reduce methane emissions from oil and gas operations, sign last year's Paris climate deal "as soon as feasible", increase the development of green technology and take action to fight climate change in the Arctic.

The US EPA will immediately start developing regulations for methane emissions from existing oil and gas operations.

Genuine warmth was shown between Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in contrast to the cool relationship between the President and ex-PM Stephen Harper.

In 2012 under Mr Harper, Canada became the first signatory to formally withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol to reduce carbon emissions.

Last year, President Obama rejected a pipeline project aimed at bringing heavy Canadian oil to the US - a project supported by Mr Harper.

The son of former PM Pierre Trudeau took office in November last year.
