Cancer survivors, carers invited to Relay for Life tribute

THE South Burnett Relay For Life is coming up quickly and there is just one month left to register for the fundraiser.

Cancer Council Queensland is looking for cancer survivors and carers who live in the South Burnett region, and is inviting them to take part in Relay For Life next month.

This year's Face of Relay representatives are Eric and Carla Cross, both cancer survivors.

They have both been busy in their roles sharing their stories and encouraging South Burnett residents to have regular health checks.

The 2019 South Burnett Relay For Life will be held on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13 at the Kingaroy Showgrounds.

The fundraiser involves teams of people keeping a baton moving in a relay-style walk or run for 18 hours in support of those affected by cancer.

South Burnett cancer survivors and carers are invited to take part in the survivors and carers lap, which will officially open the event at 3pm on Saturday, October 12.

Following the opening ceremony, carers and survivors are invited to join together for a free afternoon tea to share their stories, and to show support for each other.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan said the survivors and carers lap was an opportunity to unite with others who had been through a similar experience.

"The opening lap is all about celebrating with our survivors and recognising the contribution of carers," Ms McMillan said.

"This special relay tradition is a time that inspires all participants and reminds them just what they are raising funds for - a cancer-free future."

All survivors and carers will be given a sash to wear throughout the ceremony.

There is still time to register to participate in the South Burnett Relay For Life, an important fundraiser to help beat cancer.

"One person is diagnosed with cancer every 20 minutes in Queensland - Relay For Life enables us to support them," Ms McMillan said.

"With the support and commitment of local Relay For Life teams, volunteers and donors, we can continue to invest in life-saving research, prevention and education programs, and support services."

To take part in the survivors and carers lap, register a team, volunteer, or find out more, click here or call 1300 656 585.

Early bird registration for the South Burnett Relay For Life is only $30 for adults or $15 for youths. This ends on Friday, October 4.
