Carbon target should be raised: Climate Change Authority

THE Abbott government has been urged to make more aggressive cuts to its carbon emission reductions target, beyond the current 5% by 2020 plan.

A Climate Change Authority report released on Wednesday urged 30% of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions be cut by 2025, based on emissions in 2000.

Authority chairman Bernie Fraser wrote that Australia would be "massively affected by global warming whatever its share of global emissions".

The target was based on the efforts of "comparable countries" and Australia's "long-term interests".
