FOOTBALL: Matildas young gun Ellie Carpenter is in the running to claim the NAB Young Footballer of the Year award after being nominated for her exploits on the pitch in December.

The Canberra United star is only the second player nominated with Melbourne Victory's Kyra Cooney-Cross put forward in November.

Teenager Carpenter and her teammates were winless in December but still the 17-year-old stood out from the pack, playing in both defence and the midfield for Canberra.

The W-League Young Footballer of the Year 2017/18 will be announced at the Dolan Warren Awards Night at the end of the season.

The overall winner of the Young Footballer of the Year 2017/18 Award receives a $10,000 personal investment portfolio.

Each month representatives from the FFA technical department vote on a 3-2-1 basis for the most outstanding U23 players in the W-League during that period.
