Cars collide in wet weather as rain continues to fall

MOTORISTS have been advised to avoid the Sunshine Motorway in the Mooloolaba area following a crash this afternoon.

At 4.30pm, traffic on the southbound lanes of the Motorway was reportedly backed up from the Mooloolaba exit to the Buderim-Mooloolaba Road overpass.

Traffic has ground to a halt after a vehicle crashed into a light pole on the east-west Motorway where it crosses the north-south Motorway, just north of the Nicklin Way.

Motorists have been urged to take care on the roads as the rain continues to fall across the region.

A four-wheel-drive and a sedan collided in the northbound lane of Kawana Way at Birtinya, just outside the Homemaker Centre, this morning.

The crash occurred close to the Trade Secret store end of the complex.

Police are on scene undertaking traffic control.

Emergency services have urged motorists to drive to the conditions over the next few days.

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted 200mm of rain to fall between Thursday and Saturday across the Sunshine Coast.

Vehicles found driving beyond road closure signs can receive on-the-spot fines of $660 under provisions of the Transport Infrastructure Act.

"During and immediately after severe weather events traversing roadways, either in vehicles or on foot, can become extremely hazardous as water levels can rise and fall quickly," a police statement said.

"Members of the public are urged to avoid flooded roads, creeks and watercourses and motorists are also reminded that road closures and road conditions can change rapidly as creeks and water courses can rise and fall quickly.

Parents are also reminded to ensure their children are not playing in flood prone waterways, watercourses and drains as water levels can rise quickly.

Motorists are asked to carefully plan their trips, to regularly monitor traffic conditions and allow additional travel time, incorporating travelling at lower speeds, delays and diversions.
